Kids need to learn proper dental care at an early age. Even before they’re toddlers their dental health is important, and it’s up to parents to keep their teeth and gums clean.
As the kids start getting a little older, parents can set the right example by taking good care of their own teeth and gums. A big part of how they learn is through observation.
Sometimes kids can be fussy bout their dental care, so here are a few strategies for getting them to brush:
Reward their behavior. If they brush, you can give them an extra ten minutes playing their favorite video game or watching TV.
Play copycat. We mentioned how kids learn through observation; ask them to mimic your own brushing. A lot of kids love it!
Make it fun. Kids respond well if you make it enjoyable. Play their favorite song as they brush, or sing it yourself!
Don’t overdo it. Once they grow up, it’s important to brush for at least two minutes. But when they’re little, the main thing is to establish good habits. Brushing is the importnat thing, and it’s okay to keep it short.
