The common household toothbrush. Every home has at least one. If you have kids in the house, they probably have a down-sized brush, maybe with a movie or cartoon character on the handle. At The Pediatric Dental Center in Burlington, we hope our young patients are all brushing their teeth after each meal.
Regular brushing and flossing are still the most important things you can do for your dental health. Children need to get started on their dental care at an early age.
When they’re really little, it’s up to mom and dad to brush their children’s teeth. As they grow older, parents can teach them how to brush and floss, and to make sure it becomes a daily habit.
A youngster’s toothbrush should be replaced every three months or so, just like yours should. Don’t let them get too attached to a brush! It can be tricky when their favorite character is on it. Luckily, you should be able to find an identical replacement. You might even consider buying two or three or a favorite toothbrush at the same time.
Don’t Forget The Floss
Flossing teeth is as important to baby teeth as it is to permanent teeth. Children need to start flossing as soon as they have two teeth that are next to each other. At that point, bacterial plaque and food debris can get in there, which in turn can lead to cavities and even gum disease.
Getting your kids into the habit of brushing and flossing every day, or even twice a day, may be a battle – especially at first. They say to choose your battles wisely, and this is one worth having!
