Your child’s first dental exam at Pediatric Dental Center should occur when the first teeth are in, usually between six months and one year of age. During your child’s first check up at one of our offices serving the Greater Cincinnati area including Northern Kentucky, Southeast Indiana and Cincinnati, we’ll discuss good oral hygiene for you to practice as well as check your baby’s teeth.
As they get older, and get their checkups twice a year, we’ll discuss fluoride varnish treatments. Once the back molars appear, we will discuss sealants, a clear layer of plastic applied to the grooved surfaces of the teeth.
Sealants protect the teeth and prevent cavities by filling in the crevices where food particles can get caught. They are especially effective in the back teeth where most cavities are found.
The application process takes only one short visit. We will clean, dry, and then apply the liquid sealant to teeth, which then hardens on the top of the teeth. It’s quick and painless. Your child will be able to eat right after the appointment.
Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children; check your policy for the age limitations. Even without insurance, sealants are still cost-effective considering the cavities and future visits that can be avoided. We recommend sealants once the teeth are ready for them.
If properly cared for, sealants can last for many years, protecting your child during the most cavity-prone ages.
If you practice good oral hygiene, your sealants will last longer. Our team will check the sealants during routine dental visits and recommend re-application or repair if necessary.
