New Parents: Educate Yourselves About Children’s Oral Health

This message from the Pediatric Dental Center is for new parents or couples planning for children sometime in the future.

The statistics on early childhood tooth decay are sobering. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 42% of U.S. children between 2 and 11 years old have in their primary teeth.

It doesn’t have to be that way. If young children have proper dental care, they can avoid tooth decay. Proper dental care starts during infancy, which means parents must play an active role.

It comes down to a couple of things:

  • Clean your baby’s mouth. When they are infants, keep their gums clean by wiping them with a warm, wet cloth after nursing. As they get a little older, play an active role in brushing their teeth.
  • First dental visit. Kids should have their first checkup when the first tooth comes in, or around the time of their first birthday: whichever comes first.

Raising a child involves are sorts of knowledge and precautions, and at Pediatric  Dental Center we can provide dental health guidance.
