Keep Teeth Healthy During Pregnancy

Dental Cleanings During Pregnancy

There’s an old myth that a woman will lose a tooth for every baby she has. It’s total nonsense, of course. But at The Pediatric Dental Center we want you to know that pregnancy can lead to certain dental issues, if you don’t take proper precautions.

Increased hormones during pregnancy can affect the body’s response to the plaque that builds up on your teeth. Plaque is that filmy stuff that results from decayed food. It’s very important to brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once. You should be doing that anyway, of course. But keeping it up will reduce the chances of having pregnancy-related dental issues.

We also recommend, strongly, that you have a thorough checkup if you are planning to become pregnant, or as soon as you find out that you are. Research tells us there is a link between gum disease in pregnant women, and premature birth.

Gum disease may also result in a low birth weight in babies. Treatment for this condition may reduce this risk. Like any ailment, the sooner we diagnose and treat it, the better.

At The Pediatric Dental Center we place a lot of importance on preventative care and want all our patients to enjoy a lifetime of excellent dental health. We offer complete pediatric dentistry services, and have offices in Burlington, Cold Spring and Crestview Hills KY. Call for an appointment today!
