How to Take Care of Children's Molars While It's Still Below the Gum Line

Children may start to get their first permanent molars around the ages of six or seven.  Although these molars are still underneath the gum tissue, it is especially important to brush below the gum line.  This helps to remove food lodged between teeth and gums and remove plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth.  Brushing your teeth twice a day, helps prevent cavities.

To brush teeth correctly, place the toothbrush flush against the tooth and gumline.  Move the brush back and forth gently in short circular strokes.  Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth making sure not to miss the upper and lower. Repeat this technique in the inside and chewing surfaces of the teeth as well.  After brushing all of the teeth’s surfaces, finish by brushing the tongue to help freshen breath and remove bacteria
